Who We Are > Our Team > Open Volunteer Positions
Executive Internship (Bellingham, WA)
Duration: Start and end dates are flexible
Hours/Week: 10 hours/week (flexible)
Compensation: Volunteer

Position Summary:

The Executive Intern will wear many hats including, but not limited to, fundraising, marketing and volunteer development. The intern will probably not focus as much with grants, bookkeeping and programs; however that might depend on the specific skills of the intern and the constantly changing needs of the organization. It is envisioned that the intern will have similar duties as the Director, and will take on more duties as the assignment progresses.

CEN desires an intern who is resourceful, creative, enthusiastic and self-directed. The intern will plan and collaborate very closely with the Director. Although the Director and Intern will meet frequently, much of the work can be performed remotely (from home or elsewhere).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist the Director with his duties, eventually assuming a more and more active leadership role
  • Assist the Director in overseeing marketing operations, including the development and implementation of our organization marketing strategy through our volunteer teams. Key deliverables could include marketing collateral, the CEN Website and our quarterly Newsletter
  • Assist the Director and Board in developing and implementing CEN’s individual fundraising strategy. This position offers many opportunities to develop creative approaches towards: building our individual donor base; developing expertise in a range of fundraising activities, and building managerial experience
  • Assist the Director in planning and executing monthly board meetings
  • Check in regularly with team leads to ensure that each team is accomplishing its mission
  • Provide limited miscellaneous clerical support to the Director
  • Other duties, depending on intern’s skills and experience
KSAs (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities) Needed:
  • Commitment to CEN’s mission and strong interest in international development issues
  • Experience working or traveling in the developing world (preferred but not required)
  • Strong marketing skills, ideally with experience
  • Great problem solver
  • Strong writing skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills; be a team player
  • Detail-oriented and flexible
  • Self-directed and self-motivated; ability to work with little supervision and from home
  • Strong organizational, office and computer skills
  • Organizational leadership experience desired, but not required

You must be able to commit a minimum average of 10 hours a week. Although this is largely a “virtual” team opportunity that may performed from your home or other location, we would like for you to be located in the Bellingham, WA area so that you can meet regularly with the Director and assist in local CEN events. Candidates living in other parts of the Puget Sound will be considered as well.

Community Empowerment Network's (CEN's) operations are nearly entirely driven by the efforts of volunteers (the only exception is our Field Manager in Santarém, Brazil, who is paid under contract). We are a small organization and so lines of responsibility sometimes overlap, but this provides a terrific opportunity for volunteers to take on a variety of responsibilities and to expand their skills.
